Classroom and Testing Accommodations
This list of classroom accommodations is permitted by Providence for students with psycho-educational testing. The specific accommodations that can be used by the student will be specified in the Elementary EST Conference notes.
1. Extended time for testing
2. Testing given orally rather than written
3. Allowing students to take tests in a quiet, distraction free environment
4. Allowing the use of a Word Bank for tests
5. Allowing testing on a different day if several tests fall on the same day
6. Un-timed tests
7. Allowing student to check understanding of directions or test questions (verbal or written), or asking the teacher to rephrase a question or directions
8. Preferential seating where eye contact can be maintained with the teacher
9. Allowing frequent movement without disrupting the class
10. Modification of auditory instructions, i.e. one instruction at a time or instructions given slowly or checking immediately to see if the instructions were understood by the student
11. Note-taking supplements, i.e. teacher provided outline or notes, a “note-taking buddy” who supplements student’s notes, use of tape recorder to tape lectures
12. Allowing use of a calculator for math
13. Allowing use of a Spelling Ace for writing activities
14. Allowing written work to be done on a computer
15. Checking to make sure homework assignments are written in the student’s planner
16. Dividing long-term assignments into small, sequential steps
17. Reducing the amount of homework given
18. Modifying the spelling program, i.e. by giving fewer words or allowing the student to spell words orally.
19. Allowing student to purchase a second set of student books (not the Teacher’s Editions) or to listen to books on tape.
