Academic Team
Faculty Sponsor: Carl Barrington, Bible teacher
Description: The Academic Team consists of 12 students, grades 9-12, who are
chosen through a competitive exam. These students have the opportunity to
represent Providence on Channel 2's High Q television show, compete in
tournaments, and learn more about the relationships between all academic
disciplines. Any Providence student may try out for the team. The team is
chosen in May for the next academic year.
Advanced Ensemble
Faculty Sponsor: Sonya Harris, choir teacher
Description: Description: This group is designed to provide more challenging
opportunities for the advanced singer. Basic theory knowledge is required, as
well as previous choral experience. The Advanced Ensemble is an auditioned
group, with auditions being held in the spring of the year prior to
participation. Acceptance is also based on individual scheduling availability.
All accepted members are required to audition for the Georgia All-State Chorus
in November of each year. Opportunities include concerts, local performances,
and possible tours and festivals.
Athletics
Alpha Upsilon Service Club
Administrative Advisor: Claudia Hunt, director of admissions
Description: Alpha Upsilon is a service organization comprised of students from
the Junior Class. They are responsible for giving tours to perspective families
during the school year, and being ambassadors to new students. Each member of
Alpha Upsilon is chosen through a selection process including, an application
and interview, along with teacher recommendations. Alpha Upsilon students are
chosen because of their friendliness, leadership, and character. This
organization, which is one of the most effective recruitment tools for the
school, allows young people, who are passionate about Providence, to extend the
hand of hospitality to visitors and new students.
Axis Planning Committee
Administrative Advisor: Ken Hunsberger, Director of Student Leadership
Description: The Axis Planning Committee works on all aspects of idea
conception, planning, coordinating, and audiovisual technology that goes into
each weekly time of worship, called, “Axis.” Different student leadership teams
(usually two students) lead the entire team in preparation for two to three
Axis sessions. Therefore, a different Axis leadership team is always planning
ahead for future Axis series, even while the current series is taking place.
These teams also code, design, and organize the Axis Web site,
http://www.pcaaxis.com.
Beta Club
Faculty Sponsors: Cay Maddox and Kelly Elliott, English teachers
Description: The National Beta Club promotes character, develops leadership
skills, encourages service involvement, and recognizes academic achievement.
There is a $13 one-time membership fee. To be considered for acceptance into
this academic honor society, a junior or senior must have a cumulative overall
numerical average of 90.0. Induction takes place in the fall, and all members
are required to provide at least five service hours to the school.
Chess Club
Faculty Sponsor: Carl Barrington, Bible teacher
Description: The Chess Club is an organization that gives students grades 8-12
the opportunity to both play informal matches with each other, and also to
compete for the title of Providence Chess Champion. Tournaments are held in the
fall, winter, and spring in both singles and team chess formats. Dues are $3
per semester.
CHOICES(Girls’ Discipleship Groups)
Faculty Sponsors: Ellen Tuttle, English teacher and Janet Webb, art teacher
Description: Girls’ Discipleship consists of senior girls discipling sophomore
girls, and junior girls discipling freshman girls. During the 2005-2006 school
year, the girls are studying the book of James using the method of homiletics,
where you break down Scripture into facts, principles, and application. They
are also concentrating on studying God's Word in general, and on one-on-one
relationships. The groups meet every second and fourth Thursdays at lunch.
Cornerstone Yearbook Staff
Faculty Sponsor: Lisa Brondyke, journalism teacher
Description: Members of the Cornerstone Yearbook Staff are enrolled in either
Journalism I or II at Providence. During this class period and after school,
students explore all aspects of journalism through the process of yearbook
production. Students are engaged in journalistic interviewing, copy writing,
photojournalistic documentation editing as well as graphic design. In this
“real world” atmosphere, students learn how to balance creativity with time and
budget concerns, in addition to, learning to work productively in a
team-oriented environment, while meeting critical deadlines. Application
required.
Encounter Planning Team
Administrative Advisor: Ken Hunsberger, director of student leadership
Description: The Encounter Team is a group of students charged with the
responsibility of planning the Encounter Class Retreats at Sharp Top Cove for
grades 10-12 each September. The team, elected in January, plans the theme,
selects speakers and worship leaders, and designs the activities of the
five-day event. (Seniors attend all five days, and the sophomores and juniors
arrive on the third day.) The Encounter Team travels to the Sharp Top site on
several occasions for extensive planning and times of prayer. The 2006 team
includes seven rising seniors, two rising juniors, and two rising sophomores.
Typically, the entire team meets two times each month plus additional meetings
of smaller groups.
French Club
Faculty Sponsor: Tina O’Kelley, French teacher
Description: French Club is comprised of students who are interested in
participating in French-related activities beyond the classroom. Some of the
activities students enjoy are eating lunch from a French restaurant,
participating in National French Week for the promotion of study of the
language, hosting the annual French croissant/chocolat breakfast sale,
celebrating a French Christmas, and preparing food for Mardi Gras. Any past or
present student of French is eligible to be a member.
National Honor Society
Faculty Sponsors: Kathy Ready and Joy Bennett, math teachers
Description: Membership in the Charles G. Waddy Chapter of the National Honor
Society (NHS) at Providence Christian Academy is based on excellence in
academics, service, and character. The members NHS are required to maintain a
minimum numerical average of 93. They participate in service projects each year
that benefit the school or the community. For the last four years, NHS has
volunteered at the Providence Annual Auction in the spring, and has helped make
that a successful venture for the school. NHS has also sponsored a food drive
to benefit the Lawrenceville Co-op and victims of Hurricane Katrina. The
members of the NHS are required to exhibit outstanding character in the school
and in the community. Members of the Junior Class are inducted at a ceremony in
the fall each year.
Providence Players Drama Club
Faculty Sponsor: Ana Overton, drama teacher
Description: Drama Club is open to all students in grades 8-12. Twice a year
Drama Club is involved in the production of a play at Providence, both on the
stage and backstage. The fall play is a one-act that goes to the GHSA region
competition each year. The second play is a full-length production in the
spring. Members of the Drama Club also have the option of working their way
towards Thespian membership in the International Thespian Society, which offers
many additional opportunities to the students including, a chance to go to the
Georgia Thespian Conference.
Platoons (Boys’ Discipleship Groups)
Administrative Advisor: Ken Hunsberger, director of student leadership
Description: Wild at Heart Platoons meet the first and third Thursdays of each
month. All 9th and 10th grade boys are in a platoon, with freshmen lead by
juniors, and sophomores lead by seniors. While they do undertake the process of
using a book as a catalyst for discussion (Every Young Man's Battle), the
primary purpose of the meeting is to facilitate a mentoring and encouraging
process from our upperclassmen to the younger boys in the high school. The
leaders also check on their platoon members throughout the days in between
formal meeting times. The name, “Wild at Heart,” is taken from the book by John
Eldredge. The leaders meet separately once each month to prepare for the coming
meetings.
Spanish Club
Faculty Sponsor: Myriam Main, Spanish teacher
Description: The Spanish Club offers students an opportunity to socialize in
Spanish outside of the classroom environment during planned lunches and social
events. The club is a student-led organization, which is open to second through
fourth year Spanish students.
MERGE (Community Service Leaders)
Faculty Sponsor: Jenny Thomas, Math teacher and Guidance
Description: The MERGE Club is comprised of 8-12 graders who desire to glorify
God and serve others as a service project leader or team facilitator for an
academic school year. The team meets monthly to exchange ideas and strategies
for successful implementation of each service opportunity, and then, as often
as their particular ministry occurs. To remain in good standing, team members
must maintain a meeting attendance of 75% or greater and display effort,
energy, and passion for their project. Members of the MERGE Club gain servant
leadership skills and experience great joy giving and growing.
Student Council
Administrative Advisor: Ken Hunsberger, director of student leadership
Description: The Student Council is composed of students elected by their peers
each spring. Each grade (9-11) has three officers; the seniors have two
additional members. The student body also elects seniors as president and
vice-president of the council. The council members serve as the ears and voice
of their peers. Meeting monthly, council responsibilities include the planning
and labor force for multiple events including "Alpha" (the first day of
school), the Sadie Hawkins Dance, Hot Dog Bowl, and Homecoming week activities
and dance. The council also prayerfully determines the Axis themes for the year
including Spiritual Emphasis in the spring. During March, the seniors of the
council serve as the nominating committee for the future council of each
upcoming year and interview each candidate applying for nomination. This group
of students model servant leadership throughout the school year. Council
members are also charged with communicating information to their peers in
monthly class meetings.
