Academic Progress
The Guidance Office continuously monitors the academic progress of each student
towards graduation; however, it is the responsibility of the student to make
sure that he or she is on track for graduation, and is taking the required
courses each semester.
Academic Reports
Progress reports are issued every six weeks. A report card is issued at the end
of each semester. The semester report displays current GPA (0-4.0 scale) and
numerical cumulative averages (0-100). Averages are given for both Core Courses
and Overall Courses. Numeric and Cumulative GPA’s cannot exceed these limits.
Course grades may not exceed 100.
College Preparatory Diploma
The college preparatory diploma meets all requirements for entrance into a
Georgia Board of Regents college or university in the state of Georgia.
Elective Credits
One or more elective credits may be taken from core courses and non-core
courses. For example, three years of science is required. A fourth year of
science is counted as an elective. One year of fine arts is required. For each
additional year a fine art subject would count as an elective. Computer
Technology and Selective Studies courses are included in elective credits.
Failures
All required core courses that have not been successfully completed must be
retaken during the summer in grades 9-12. Electives courses, which have not
been successfully completed, must be repeated if the student desires to obtain
credit for the course. Eighth Grade students who fail one or two courses may
enter Ninth Grade provided that administratively approved remedial work has
been completed during the summer. Students in eighth through eleventh grades
who fail more than two semester courses may not return to Providence the
following school year.

At the time when most students apply for college admissions, the only completed
core courses on the high school transcript are from Grades 9, 10, and 11. No
courses from Grade 12 have been completed. It is not possible to earn a 3.5 if
the 9th grade GPA is between 1.5 and 2.5.

In the sample above, the student began Foreign Language in the freshman year,
and ten out of fourteen core courses were completed in Grades 9 and 10. It is
important for parents and students to understand that a poor academic start in
high school can significantly limit a student’s college options.
Graduation Policies
-
All graduation requirements must be satisfied before a student is permitted to
participate in the graduation ceremony, or receive a diploma.
-
A student may not take a course in summer school that is offered at Providence
during the school year unless they failed the course or have special permission
from the principal.
Hope Grant
HOPE grant eligibility is calculated using all Core subjects (Math, Science,
English, Foreign Language, and Social Studies taken in grades 9-12). A 3.00 GPA
meets minimum requirements. The Georgia Student Finance Authority calculates
final Hope Grant eligibility.
How to Aim for a Higher GPA
Four steps are used in this process. The steps are listed.
-
Calculate the number of cumulative Grade Points “GP” (Cum Credits)(Cum GPA) =
GP
-
Calculate the “GP” necessary for Target GPA (Sum of Cum Credits)(Target GPA) =
Target “GP”
-
Calculate the Average grades needed to reach Target GPA. (Target “GP”)-(Cum
“GP”) = Current “GP”
-
Calculate the average grade needed in each subject to reach Target GPA.
(Current “GP”)/(Number of Credits attempted this Semester) = Average Grade
needed in each subject to reach Target GPA
Junior Review
During the months of January and February “Junior Review” is completed. During
this process, academic progress is evaluated, the Course Selection Form is
completed, and college exploration is continued. Course selection forms are
returned at this time. Each junior will have a specific date to return the
Course Selection Form. A parent or guardian signature is required on the Course
Selection Form before classes are scheduled.
Service Program (SPEED)
Students in grades 8-12 are required to complete fifteen (15) hours of service
each school year in attendance.
Selective Studies
The Selective Studies program is designed to offer a combination study skills
and knowledge and use of one’s personal learning style. A course requirement is
psycho-educational testing within the past three years. Students with current
testing who wish to have classroom accommodations or extended time on college
entrance exams must register with the Selective Studies Department. After
registering, the student is monitored by the Selective Studies Department.
Being monitored entails an annual meeting with the teachers and parents of the
student to make the staff aware of the student’s disability, and the
accommodations the classroom teacher should give the student. The specific
accommodations requested must be stated in the testing report, the report must
be on file at school, and the administration must approve these accommodations.
Enrollment in Study Skills 35.061000 is not a requirement for being monitored.
Valedictorian/Salutatorian
The following criteria apply:
-
Highest overall numeric cumulative average with no failing grades the fall
semester of the senior year.
-
Approved by administrative and faculty committee.
-
Attendance at Providence Christian Academy for at least three (3) consecutive
years grades 10-12.
