We believe that, as God’s creation, He formed each of us uniquely for a work He
has planned especially for us. Each of us is gifted with a specific set of
talents and abilities. We may shine in art, drama, academics, music, athletics,
writing, oratory, and empathy for others, but in one or more areas, we all
shine! Struggles in an area of life are God’s preparation for His work in
us.
For students in need of academic support services, we offer Selective Studies,
a program unique to Providence Christian Academy. Selective Studies is designed
to help students in grades one through twelve who are either struggling
academically, or who have a diagnosed condition such as AD/HD or a specific
learning disability that can adversely affect their learning. The majority of
students we serve are above average or gifted in intelligence. Many have
executive functioning issues, which interfere with planning, time management,
and organization. The goal of the program is to help these students become
successful academically in the regular classroom and learn to turn what could
be labeled a disability into a gift in their lives, and embrace it as God’s
best for them!
At each grade level the Selective Studies program facilitates an Educational
Support Team (EST) of parents, teachers, and outside professionals to support
the student. We meet on a regular basis to adjust the treatment plan to meet
the student’s needs. A psycho-educational
evaluation often forms the basis for this plan. The student becomes a
part of this team in the middle school years, and gradually learns to advocate
for himself while in high school.
A diagram of a
three-legged stool is a visual of our student
support model at Providence, and it is vital that this be understood and
followed for student success. The seat is the Treatment Plan based on the
psycho-educational evaluation. The three legs of the stool are the School, the
Parents, and the Student who must all give their wholehearted support in the
treatment for it to be effective. Any combination of two legs without the third
results in continual frustration and, ultimately, failure. Any amount of
pressure and the stool will collapse without three legs.
Permission from the elementary or high school principal or the Director of the
Selective Studies Program must be obtained for enrollment into the Selective
Studies program. The Selective Studies Office can be reached by phone at
770-279-7200, ext. 3941.
Members of our Selective Studies staff have over 100 years of experience
working with students with special needs in public, private, and home schooling
environments. To view the staff’s professional biographies, please
